Many years ago Wired magazine ran a piece tracing BBS to W.E.L.L, groups, netiquette, and moderation. I wrote a paper for the Bulletin of Science and Technology in Society in 1988. Much traces to Brand, but also much can be traced to the 70s commune called The Farm in Tennessee, which was technoliterate when you had to solder your own motherboards and use ham radio modems. Farm "mods" (some WE Catalog staff alums) migrated to the W.E.L.L. and set social norms still used today.
